About Me

picture of the author I am a software developer. Like many folks in my profession, I have far too many hobbies. I can't support them all. My primary passion is my family. I have been blessed with a great friend (my wife of 15 years, Julie) and two lovely daughters.

I like photography - ever since my Dad first let me use his ancient Canon, to my first camera (also a Canon - the old A-1), to the Canon T90, to a succession of digital cameras (the most recent being a Canon G3). Bit of a Canon fan, eh?

I spend far too much time on the computer, doing more reading than writing. I'm a "linkblogger", and my del.icio.us page keeps track of that. Recently I have started blogging at Los Techies where I will probably be keeping my more software-focused material. I'll keep the personal and opinion stuff here.

I like to build real stuff, things I can actually touch, when I have time. Which is not very often. Woodworking is something I do some of, although the shop is often too messy to work in. I tinker with lots of different stuff. I carry a leatherman everywhere (except airports).

If you'd like to see my work experience, see my resume.

If you're wondering about the photo at the top of the page… I took that a few years back at Christmastime. There is a neighborhood here in Austin that is famous for its holiday light show. Its over on 37th street or so, near the University. A neat neighborhood of renters and owners. Anyways - they put on a big show every year, and one year a guy made a big "ball" of lights. It was more of a dodecahedron than a ball, but I digress. It was made of black plastic pipe, about 8 feet in diameter. He covered it with tons of lights and then hung it from a very high branch so that you could spin it. This is a closeup of the lights a-spinnin', with a slow shutter speed to get that cool blur.

Finally, if you're wondering about the title of the blog…

pithy
'pi-thE
adjective
pith·i·er; -est
1: consisting of or abounding in pith
2: having substance and point : terse and full of meaning; concise; succinct
So my aim is to write things that are concise and full of information. Sometimes I achieve that. I also liked it because it sounded kind of like "pissy" and I occasionally rant about things that upset me.
